How to Pass YKI Speaking Section

YKIprep TeamJun 10, 20265 min read

The speaking section of the YKI exam is conducted in a language lab. You sit in front of a computer, wearing headphones, and record your answers to prompts. It is fast-paced, noisy (as everyone else is speaking at the same time), and often considered the most stressful part of the test. Here's how to succeed.

Understand the Structure

The speaking exam consists of four parts:

  1. Simulated Conversations (Tilannepuhe): You respond to a recorded prompt. For example, a neighbor asks you to move your car, or you need to return a faulty item to a store.
  2. Narrative/Speech (Kertominen): You speak on a given topic (e.g., your hobbies, Finnish weather, or your first job) for 1.5 to 2 minutes.
  3. Opinion Expression (Mielipide): You are given a controversial statement and have to state and justify your opinion.
  4. Rapid Responses (Nopeat vastaukset): Quick, short answers to simple questions.

Three Secrets to Scoring Level 3/4

1. Don't Stop Speaking

Silences are marked down. Even if you make grammatical mistakes, keep talking. Use fillers like "tota", "siis", or "no niin" to buy time rather than staying silent.

2. Speak Clearly and Audibly

Since the room will be full of other test-takers speaking at the same time, speak directly into your microphone. Do not whisper. Try to focus entirely on your own screen and headphones.

3. Master Conversational Openers

Learn ready-to-use phrases for opening conversations:

  • "Anteeksi, voisitko auttaa minua?" (Excuse me, could you help me?)
  • "Olen pahoillani, mutta..." (I'm sorry, but...)
  • "Minun mielestäni..." (In my opinion...)
