What is the YKI Exam?

YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto) is the National Certificate of Language Proficiencyin Finland. It's the official exam recognized by Finnish immigration authorities (Migri), employers, and educational institutions.

Passing the YKI intermediate level is a key requirement for Finnish citizenship. The exam tests your ability to communicate in real-life situations in Finnish.

Exam Format

Exam Structure

The YKI exam consists of four sections testing different language skills.

Reading Comprehension

Understand texts, forms, emails, and articles in Finnish. Questions test your ability to extract key information.

Listening Comprehension

Listen to conversations, announcements, and news in Finnish. Answer questions about what you heard.

Writing

Write messages, emails, or short essays in Finnish. Evaluated on grammar, vocabulary, and coherence.

Speaking

Participate in spoken tasks: describe pictures, role-play situations, and express opinions in Finnish.

Proficiency Levels

YKI Levels Explained

1–2

Basic Level (CEFR A1–A2)

Can handle simple, everyday communication. Understand and use basic phrases for greetings, shopping, and simple requests.

3–4

Intermediate Level (CEFR B1–B2)

Required for Finnish citizenship. Can communicate effectively in work and social situations. Express opinions and handle formal communication.
